Many believe AI will make IT companies less relevant. I see it differently.
Over the last 70 years, the global software industry has likely invested on the order of one trillion engineering hours in building today’s digital world. Yet most software remains a work in progress—requiring better security, reliability, usability, scalability, AI integration, and continuous modernization.
It would not be surprising if the effort needed to bring today’s software much closer to its full potential is several times greater than what has already been invested. AI may cut development time dramatically, perhaps by half or even more, but it also expands what is possible. Projects that were once uneconomical will now become feasible.
History shows that every major leap in productivity has increased demand rather than eliminated it. AI is likely to follow the same pattern.
The result is not the end of the IT industry, but its evolution. Routine coding will shrink, while demand for higher-value engineering, architecture, domain expertise, and AI-driven innovation will continue to grow.
IT companies are therefore likely to remain highly relevant for a long, long time.
