India accumulated immense wealth over centuries, much of it in gold. That prosperity attracted repeated invasions and plunder. History also shows that wealth alone cannot guarantee security. Nations must continually invest in defence, military technology, well-trained armed forces, and political unity.
At different times, Indian rulers who failed to keep pace with advances such as gunpowder weapons, artillery, disciplined armies, and modern military organization found themselves at a disadvantage. Combined with political fragmentation, this made resistance to some foreign invasions more difficult.
The enduring lesson is that economic prosperity and national security must advance together. Saving and creating wealth are essential, but so is investing adequately in defence and maintaining national unity.
