If India is genuinely concerned about choking urban pollution, it must stop treating petrol and diesel vehicles as symbols of aspiration and start treating them for what they are — sin goods. Pricing them higher through taxation is not punishment; it is correction.Costlier fossil-fuel vehicles would force a rethink of daily commuting, making walking, cycling, and mass public transport economically and socially sensible again. Cleaner air will not come from advisories and slogans, but from uncomfortable policy choices.The resistance will be fierce. The automobile manufacturing lobby will argue jobs, growth, and competitiveness. But the real question is simple: should policy protect balance sheets, or protect lungs?
